I may or may not have wasted a few bucks at Kohl’s.

That place is so seductive. I feel like Diamond Jim in there.

Savings everywhere! It’s on sale! Only $19.99 – & I have a coupon for 97% off!

I lost my composure. And somehow maintained my lack of composure long enough to wait on that silly line that snakes back and forth like at Disneyland. Then I brought it home. And tried out my Cookbook #2 Chocolate Doughnut Muffins recipe on it (which, after 3 fails, is a swinging success – you’ll see next Fall).

I’m pretty sure none of this is my fault, though. I really think someone somewhere asked if these Cinnamon Doughnut Muffins from a recipe I wrote for Living Without Mag could be made in a doughnut maker.

I had never even heard of a doughnut maker. I figured I was the doughnut maker.

Then I went to Kohl’s. The End.

They are cute, though.

And I dipped ‘em in a chocolate egg nog glaze (confectioner’s sugar + cocoa powder + egg nog).

[That pink on my dry & craggy old lady pointer finger? GF Cream Wafers.]

FYI, when the glaze sets, it’s a protective coating.

If you don’t have a 93.5% off coupon for Kohl’s and/or you haven’t taken leave of your senses, you could just make doughnut muffins in a muffin pan. And pimp it out with some pretty toppings from our sponsor Primp My Cupcake.*

*Did you know that Primp My Cupcake has a comprehensive list of Allergen information on all their edible products?*

Love,
Me

P.S. Have a lovely weekend. Wanna hang out?

P.P.S. See you next week for more recipes, peeking, and general wacky hijinks.

Now I think I need a donut maker! (other than me!)

  • Sarah Grace

hey, bargains are wonderful!! i don’t blame you!

now, you *could* have gotten a donut baking pan…. that’s one thing i wanna get eventually. that and a whoopie-pie pan (that’s the perfect shape for not only whoopie pies, but also for hamburger buns!).

    • Nicole

      Hi, Sarah,
I know! I hadn’t planned to get either one, actually. Kohl’s sucked me in. ;)
Whoopie Pies don’t need their own pan! They’re so easy to make – and so good. *sigh* wish I had one right now.
      xoxo Nicole

I’ve thought about getting one, that and the cake ball maker, but I talk myself out of it every time

  • Kim

Those look pretty amazing. I would love a great recipe for glazed doughnuts. Boy do I miss the yeasty dough.

    • Nicole

      Hi, Kim,
I have this recipe for yeasted doughnuts on the blog. Try that!

Wow – these look great! I think i’ll take them in a “tropical” route and add some coconut flakes … oh, thanks for the inspiration!

    • Nicole

      Hi, Tasos,
Oooh tropical sound … sexy. ;)

My in-laws gave me a donut maker several years ago…..might have to get it out and dust it off!!

  • Linda Stoddard

After whining ad nauseam about the price for ordering those little gems online and being disappointed in the flavor and texture, I guess my friend got sick of hearing about it—so bless her Let’s-Rescue-the-Anal- Retentive heart, she came bounding in one day with an armful of doughnut makers–the little kind and the tiny kind. OK, so they’re cute and they do work, especially if you pile enough toppings on top. Definitely will never replace those huge, airy glazed yeastie ones BC, but hey—we make do. Merry merry Christmas to you and family! xoxLinda

    • Nicole

      Hi, Linda!
Yeah – nothing like yeasted doughnuts. Have you tried these?
      Merry Christmas to you, too!
      xoxo Nicole

      • Linda Stoddard

oh geez, I forgot about that one. My bad. I rarely fry, but this would be the exception. I just reread my previous comment and sorry to be obtuse–I meant to say…’armful of doughnut baking pans’ not ‘doughnut makers.’ Duh.The more I think about it, why not get a doughnut maker? I’m thinking maybe it would cut down on the time. something to experiment with…:-)

        • Nicole

          No problem, Linda.
I’m not so sure I’d recommend buying one of these little doughnut makers. I like the idea of something electric rather than having to turn on the whole oven, but the little contraption is really limited.
Oh, and I knew what you meant about the armful. ;)
          xoxo Nicole

  • Michelle Wilcox on Facebook

I toyed between a donut maker and the mini donut pans…I opted for the pans in the end! But I might need the maker anyway as the pan donuts are teeny, not mini!!

  • Shauna Wagner on Facebook

Those are so cute!! Glazed doughnuts are a beautiful thing.

  • Kristi Fossier Gueho on Facebook

I kick myself all the time for selling my donut maker in my pre-gee eff days. Back then I was like “I’m not making donuts when I can buy a dozen for $1.50″, now I’m like “Ewwwww gluteney donuts, bleh, gross, rid them of the stores!!” Now, I really want a donut maker :-/

  • Susan

I used you Cinnamon Doughnut muffin recipe, worked great. YUMMY, even my non-GF eighteen-year old son loved them.

    • Nicole

Love it, Susan! So glad. :)
      xoxo Nicole

  • Lisa F.

YAY! I bought a doughnut maker a few months back in one of my “My son should have everything everybody else gets to eat” moments. We used it once and was aweseome. I used a brownie mix and it made delicious, doughnut shaped, brownies. :) I’m thrilled for a new recipe to try in this little extravagance.
    Happy weekend!

  • http://www.glutenfreecanteen.com Lisa @ GF Canteen

I saw that little machine and thought about it, but if I brought home one more thing for the kitchen I’d have to clean out a cupboard or closet to store it. that isn’t happening. but I’m glad you did so I can see how it worked. those are adorable and seem more reliable for getting the shape right than the donut pan for the oven. looks like it bakes evenly. And how did you know I love chocolate donuts with chocolate-y glaze and sprinkles? : )

    • Nicole

Lisa, you’ve already taken quite a few lumps for the team — like a certain windmill cookie mold you wrote about today. It’s only fair that I took this particular lump.
They do bake pretty evenly – and I would suggest stuffing the well pretty full (against the manufacturer’s directions – but if you read the directions, you’d soon see it’s a fool’s errand to trust much of what they say in there). That helps. It’s kinda cool, kinda kitschy.
Oh, and Lulu & Phoebe told me how you like your doughnuts.
      xoxo Nicole

  • JoAnn C

I am so all about the chocolate. Why are you such a tease? I thought you loved all of us?

    • Nicole

I know you’re all about the chocolate, JoAnn. I’m so ashamed of myself. I have no excuse.

LOL I had asked you a few weeks ago if you had ever tried one of these & now you have. I am getting the donut hole maker for Christmas. I figured at least they don’t take up too much space & I could try the new cake pop craze. Thanks for your review.

  • http://glutenfreefun.blogspot.com Erin Smith

I definitely want to hang out if you are making these donuts!

    • Nicole

Erin I have to cook for you! Maybe if I’m really nice, you’ll invite me over and I’ll cook for you sometime. :)

I bought one of those darling mini doughnut makers and I love it. I demo-ed a pumpkin spice mix from Zema’s at my Holiday Dinner class. . Very healthy, low fat and if you need more— shake them in cinnamon sugar in a paper bag. I might even use my Red Velvet pancake recipe( on Pamela’s website.) To me they are just the right size. I surely don’t need a big doughnut. A little taste satisfies. I used the coupon deal, too.

  • Lisa Loyd

****sigh*** I luv u! You are such a RAWK Star in the GF World that is so cruel to us!

  • http://www.heathersblog-o-rama.blogspot.com Heather :) :) :)

Oh my word, these are GOOD :) :) I can’t wait to make GF donuts :) :) I’ve heard of that donut maker. I think I saw one at Macy’s the other day..now I have a reason to buy one ;) :) Yeah, yeah, yeah for donuts :) :) Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :)

    • Nicole

Make sure you get it on sale, Heather. They’re not worth that much. ;)

As I sit here watching my 6yo daughter eat a 7-dollar Kinnikinnick frozen doughnut … I NEED THAT MACHINE!!!

Maybe at an after-Christmas clearance …

    • Nicole

      Hi, Lesley,
And those doughnuts aren’t even good! You can always just make doughnuts in a muffin pan in the meantime. ;)
      xoxo Nicole

  • lysa

we have one and used it to make birthday donuts for my daughter. Everyone got to put on their own toppings. We made a little pyramid out of them. very cute. the recipe sucked though. I can’t wait to try yours!

    • Nicole

Did you use the recipe that comes with the Doughnut Maker, Iysa? It definitely sucks! I could tell by looking at it. My first inclination was to use that recipe, so that I could report back about it, but as soon as I saw it I was skeptical about the whole endeavor — and knew I couldn’t use that recipe. Maybe try the Cinnamon Doughnut Muffin recipe I did for Living Without, in the meantime? So sorry you had to use that terrible recipe!
      xoxo Nicole

  • Sarah

I got the cake pop one for myself for christmas. I have a mini donut pan and my 4 yo likes making donuts. Might check out that other recipe to see about trying that. If i’m gonna make them i wanna be able to eat them too. (even though i found baking with wheat flour helps my diet– less things i eat)

    • Nicole

You should be able to eat them, too, for sure, Sarah. Moderation doesn’t mean deprivation!

I like to use a GF cake mix (chocolate or vanilla) in my donut maker then glaze them. Not as good as homemade but quick & easy

  • Jenny Weiand

      • gfshoestring

Jenny, no! I really loved “me day.” I giggled about “me Lucky Charms.” You were a leprechaun! I was so happy to make your day, whatever way you say it. It’s a privilege. :)
